Golf Beats Aerospace in Local Economic Impact

Tuesday, April 6, 2010 – San Diego Business Journal

San Diego County’s golf industry had a total economic impact of $3.7 billion in 2008, making it a key driver of the region’s economy, according to a study released April 6 by the National University System Institute for Policy Research.

The study said that area golf manufacturers including Callaway Golf Co. and TaylorMade Golf Co. Inc. generated about $1.9 billion in revenue and employed 6,700 workers. In addition, those businesses generated another $1.8 billion in indirect and induced economic activity, bringing the total impact to $3.7 billion.

All together, the industry accounted for about 26,900 jobs, the study found.

The combined economic impact was equal to the region hosting 10 Super Bowls, or 37 Comic-Con conventions, the study noted.

It was also greater than several other industries for 2008, including aerospace, with an impact of $1.8 billion; agriculture, at $1.6 billion; and software at $1.6 billion.

The report also estimated that revenue generated by the area’s many golf courses was more than $400 million; revenue generated from golf tournaments and golf-related tourism was estimated then at $247 million.
